H AMLET’S PLOT By Sebastian Colino

AUTHOR, SETTING, AND MAIN CHARACTERS  Hamlet, the play is written by William Shakespeare  The book took place in the Royal Castle in Denmark  The main characters in the play are  Hamlet (a Denmark prince)  Claudius (Hamlet’s uncle and king of Denmark)  The Ghost (Hamlet’s father, the former king of Denamark that was murdered)  Gertrude (Hamlet’s mother and the wife of Claudius  Horatio (a scholar and Hamlet’s friend)

HAMLET RETURNS  Hamlet unhappily returns from his school in Germany to attend his father’s funeral  Gertrude remarries Claudius, which Hamlet is not happy about

THE GHOST  A pair of watchmen see a Ghost that walks the ramparts of the of the castle, and has the likeness of the dead king.  The scholar Horatio next sees the ghost and again said that it looked like the dead king.  Horatio and the watchmen bring Hamlet to the ghost and it speaks ominously to him, declaring that he was in fact murdered by the king, by pouring a cup of poison into his ear.

HAMLET GONE MAD  Hamlet had trouble trusting the ghost, thinking about how it could be a ghost from the devil.  He enters into a deep melancholy and even appeared to go insane  Claudius and Gertrude employed two of Hamlet’s friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to spy on him.

THE PLOY  Hamlet came up with an idea to trust the Ghost’s trustworthiness  He would have a group of actors perform a play with a murder, and make the murder be like one the Ghost described  The ploy worked, Claudius had to leave the theater, looking guilty  Hamlet and Horatio (who are now working together to prove Claudius’ guiltiness) think that this is enough to prove him guilty.

PARANOIA  Claudius, frightened of Hamlet’s madness and fearing for his safety, ordered that Hamlet be sent to England immediately  Hamlet goes to comfort his mother Gertrude, and hearing a noise from behind a tapestry, swiftly stabs it, thinking that is the king, but it is Polonius, a noble who his spying on him  For this crime, he is immediately dispatched to England with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern

EVIL PLAN MAKING  Hamlet’s ship is attacked by pirates and it is forced to turn around  Claudius concocts a plan to kill Hamlet  It included using Laertes’ (Polonius’ son) revenge he wanted againast Hamlet  He would have them swordfight, but poison the blad of Laertes’ sword, so if he drew blood Hamlet would die.  As a backup plan he had a poisoned goblet Hamlet would have to drink from if he won the first hit

THE DEADLY SWORD FIGHT  The sword fighting begins  Hamlet scores the first hit, but refuses to drink the goblet  Instead, Gertrude drinks from it and is swiftly killed by the poison  Laertes wounds Hamlet, but he does not die from it immediately

THE DEADLY SWORD FIGHT CONTINUED  Laertes is then cut by his own blade and tells Hamlet Claudius’ part in the murder of Gertrude, then dies of the poison  Hamlet then stabs Cluadius through with the poisoned blade and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned wine  Hamlet dies immediately after achieving his revenge

A NEW KING  A Norwegian prince named Fortinbras declared himself king  He gave Hamlet full military honors
