Classroom Design: Maude Trevvett Elementary- 2 nd Grade October 6, 2015 Katharine Ellis

Security & Shelter Students need to feel safe physically as well as emotionally while at school. They need to have space to move around and not feel crowded all the time. In this photo, this is a picture of the reading rug, where the teacher reads a book every morning, and then they break off into small group readings. They are able to cozy up using pillows and grab a book for 15 minutes of reading each day. There is also another large rug on the other side of the classroom.

Social Contact: Interaction among students is a part of every students daily activity. This classroo set up had clustered seating so that students can work together in small groups. Also, this allows the teacher to move around the room more efficiently, and to keep order in the class.

Symbolic Identification: What does the classroom tell us about it’s students? The students made a portrait of themselves and told us their names and what they like. This project gave students a sense of ownership in their classroom. And they were excited for me to see their art!

Task Instrumentality : This involves the many ways that the environment helps us carry out daily tasks that need to be accomplished, the flow of the classroom, and that everything has it’s place. This classroom is well organized, and everything has it’s place and function!

This function in the classroom involves the whole classroom. Is the classroom open? Well lit? Are there windows? This classroom is open, and the entire back wall is made out of windows. They have a water fountain and sink in the classroom, which allows children to get water whenever they need to, or wash their hands after snack, without having to leave the classroom. There are several big colorful rugs that children are able to do their work on. And they have computers in their class where they work on their reading and math skills openly and freely without having to bump elbows with their neighbor. Pleasure

Growth This function is specifically to help children’s development in the classroom. This is the classroom’s Promethean board. Every class in the whole school has a Promethean board. This allows children and teachers to interact daily, more efficiently and with more participation.
