Presentation transcript:

Thomas Hickey Chief Scientist, OCLC Research 2015 August VIAF Council State of VIAF VI AF

Size of VIAF 37 active participants/files 29 million VIAF clusters 53 million source authority records – 39 M personal – 6 M corporate/conference – 4 M geographic – 4 M title 54 million links 111 million bibliographic records

Software changes Improvements – Extraction of country, gender – Recognition of dates (paper in code{4}lib) – xR work/expression extraction from WorldCat – Work/expression matching – Use of VIAF IDs – Upgrading of ISNI links

Source File Changes Added – Ireland – Taiwan In progress – Chile, Korea, Quebec, Russia Changed from English Wikipedia to Wikidata – Names no longer need to be in en.wikipedia – Also now matching corporates and geographics

Expansion of Geographics Prompted by move to Wikidata – RDF in Wikidata made this easier Also pulled in FAST geographics Pushed us into relaxing rules to include ‘not suitable for use as a main heading’ records Hope to add TGN (Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names)

Planned Changes New source files Direct update – Greater cluster stability – Faster updates – First thing visible will be longer IDs for new clusters Imaginary characters?

Imaginary Characters RDA prompted changes in LC/NAF – Gradually moving them from subjects to name file Causing trouble in processing of WorldCat Identities May tackle this in FAST – Regularize the forms – Load into VIAF?

Finding Works and Expressions Production enhanced WorldCat PREVIOUS FRBR CLUSTERS VIAF Generated Authorities Works & Expressions Meta Authorities  Full Encoding  Series  Overrides  FAST  GLIMIR  Aud Level  LCSH, Genres, MeSH Work Records
