Use of Technology

Training Innovation Athletes attending sports academies now have access to a wealth of information that is used to observe, analyse, enhance and evaluate technique. Is this a form of cheating?

Innovations & Technologies 1) Innovation: Video analysis and editing Features: plays back footage of a game or event for analysis. Uses computer technology with digital camera equipment Benefits: provides feedback to athletes, analyses competitors, improves technique 2) Innovation: 3D Motion analysis technology Features: analyses biomechanics Benefits: pinpoints strengths and weakness in technique, prevents injury 3) Innovation: 3D stimulations Features: analyses systems in a video game-style environment. Acts like a virtual game where the athlete plays against the computer Benefits: allows rehabilitation training, helps athletes learn and master complex techniques, fine tunes decision making and strategy in a controlled environment, mimics requirements of game

Other innovations cont … 4) Innovation: GPS devices Features: collects data on time, distance, speed, position, altitude and heart rate. It is downloaded and analysed using specially designed software. Benefits: monitors the position and condition of outdoor sport players 5) Others?

Advances in Equipment Eg: Golf 1)Swimming Innovations: specialised fabrics, form-fitting caps, streamlined goggles Advantages Gained: 2) Rowing Innovations: boats and oars made out of composite plastic Advantages Gained:

Advances in Equipment cont … 3) Tennis Innovations: racquets made of graphite, are bigger, synthetic strings Advantages Gained: 4) Skiing Innovations: skis are thinner, lighter and more flexible. Bindings are lighter, poles stronger and lighter Advantages Gained:

Advances in Equipment cont … 5) Cycling Innovations: lighter bikes, aerodynamic clothing, specialised bike designs, concussion reduction technology in helmets, muscle warmers Advantages Gained: 6) Athletics Innovations: blocks for crouched start, spiked running shoes, tartan track Advantages Gained:
