THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY Training Innovation Video Analysis of Performance Data Gathering and Analysis
THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY Technological advances and their applications within sports have provided coaches with additional means of improving performance. Various aids are designed to correct technique, create resistance, offer support or padding and improve performance. Most have made the work of coaches easier because they are able to simulate game or competition situations.
Training Innovation Some technological innovations which have improved sports performance include: Clothing Protective equipment Computer programs and software Internet Electronic scoreboards and score sheets Engineering technology at sporting venues (retractable roofs)
Training Innovation Others include: Equipment modifications Testing procedures Nutrition Video analysis and photographic equipment Rehabilitation equipment Alternative therapies
Video Analysis Advantages of video analysis: Immediate play back of performance on technique and biomechanic efficiency. Allows coaches to fully concentrate on game. Assess performance of opposition. Able to plan effectively by examining past performances. Allows the coach to analyse strategies.
Data Gathering and Analysis Advantages Computer software improve capacity to store data and allow for ease of reference, entering of statistics and then used to give feedback to players. Able to apply data to improve performance eg: heart rate monitors can download information to determine if athletes have exercised in the target heart rate zone.
Data Gathering and Analysis Strengths and weaknesses of opposition can be evaluated. Computer software can allow athletes to create their own training programs, plan nutrition and track weekly progress. It also allows immediate feedback.
