Depth of Knowledge: Secondary Math Smarter Balanced Professional Development for Washington High-need Schools University of Washington Tacoma Maria Gross

Webb’s DOK or “How deep can your students go?” CCSS alone do not bring rigor to the classroom Webb’s DOK is one tool to analyze cognitive demand intended by the standards DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

DOK Math Module Goals Define (DOK1) DOK Levels Categorize (DOK2) existing Smarter Balanced problems by DOK Level Cite evidence (DOK3) for DOK Levels in existing and developed problems Modify/revise (DOK3) existing Smarter Balanced materials to vary DOK level Create (DOK4) balanced assessment DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

Match Webb’s DOK levels with Bloom’s Taxonomy

Examples of Activities and their DOK Level

Applying DOK to Lessons DOK coding helps scaffold lessons and balance assessments Students should be exposed to activities that represent all DOK levels Smarter Balanced practice problems may be modified to scaffold students to designated DOK Level DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

Other LEVEL 4 Examples Performance Tasks Will cover in another module

Scaffolding Problems Provided DOK Level is top level for problem Scaffolding provides various points of entry for diverse student levels DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

What are the DOK Levels? Work with partners Share after work 4 Justify answer using key words, activity examples and/or DOK descriptions For DOK2 and DOK3 Level problems, revise to DOK1 (or DOK2) Levels DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

Share DOK Level with rationale Revisions for scaffolding DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

Share DOK Level with rationale Revisions for scaffolding DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

Share DOK Level with rationale Revisions for scaffolding DOK1: Recall DOK2: Skill/Concept DOK3: Strategic Thinking DOK4: Extended Thinking

In-Class Assignment With partner: Select one or two standards to assess Develop a 12 problem assessment 2 problems at DOK 3 4 problems at DOK 2 6 problems at DOK 1 State rationale for each problem’s DOK level Brainstorm a DOK Level 4 Activity
