DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERCENT PROBLEMS What are they and how do we solve them?

WHAT TOOL DO WE USE TO SOLVE PERCENT PROBLEMS? Use a proportion! This will be your starting point for all percent problems. Reminder: (Part times 100) = (Total times Percent)

TYPE 1: FINDING THE PERCENT Ex. What percent is 25 of 50? (The word “is” is your clue that 25 is your “part” and the word “of” is your clue that 50 is your “total” or “whole”) When you solve the proportion you should get 50 percent.

TYPE 2: FINDING THE PART Ex. What is 25% of 60? (Your clues again are “is” and “of”. This time you are given a percent and a total of 60) When you solve the proportion you should find that 15 is 25% of 60.

TYPE 3: FINDING THE TOTAL (OR WHOLE) Ex. 20 is 25% of what? (The clues show that 20 is your “part” and you are looking for the “of” which is also known as the total or whole) Solve the proportion to find that your total is 80.

Which problem is which type? 1) 35 is 50% of what? Type 3 2) What percent is 12 of 144? Type 1 3) What is 20% of 50? Type 2 This website has more practice problems as well as a link to review proportions:
