This topic interested me because my Junior year at Haverford High School I suffered a separated shoulder that let to myself tearing my Labrum, a ligament in the shoulder. I set out to research questions on this topic that could benefit me and others. I set out to research questions on this topic that could benefit me and others.

Questions How do these injuries happen? How do these injuries happen? How can we prevent these injuries? How can we prevent these injuries? How can we treat these injuries? How can we treat these injuries? Why are these injuries happening so frequently? Why are these injuries happening so frequently?

How do These Injuries Happen? I wanted to find the basics to start my search. I wanted to find the basics to start my search. I looked to see how frequently these injuries are happening, and how many do happen. I looked to see how frequently these injuries are happening, and how many do happen. –I wanted to see if my injury was outstanding or if this was common. –I also wanted to see if it was something I personally did wrong that caused my injury.

How Can We Prevent These Injuries? Looking into preventing these injuries was the next aspect of my research. Looking into preventing these injuries was the next aspect of my research. –I wanted to see if there was anything more I could have done to prevent my injury, and now that I have sustained one, what I can do to prevent further injury. I also wanted to see if enough is being done across the country to prevent injuries. I also wanted to see if enough is being done across the country to prevent injuries.

How Can We Treat These Injuries? I researched treatments to see if I went through the proper process. I researched treatments to see if I went through the proper process. I also wanted to see how other injuries are treated and what injuries take longer to recover from. I also wanted to see how other injuries are treated and what injuries take longer to recover from. –This section interested me because I wanted to see if there was anyway for me to treat my injury faster so I could have been back in time for the playoff game.

Why Are These Injuries Happening? To further my research I wanted to know why all these are injuries happening. To further my research I wanted to know why all these are injuries happening. –I was wondering what advances are currently in place, and are better ways to prevent injuries coming along. I went further to see if the schools are to blame. I went further to see if the schools are to blame. –Do schools provide enough care for the kids? –Schools that do have trainers, are they effective enough?

How They Happen The most common way injuries happen is by overuse. The most common way injuries happen is by overuse. –Athletes today are pressured to specialize in one sport. –When they specialize in one sport they practice the same thing over and over again. –If they keep hammering the same muscles eventually they will rip or tear. –A pediatrician doctor, Eric Small, says 75% of his injuries are overuse.

Prevention The best way to prevent these injuries from happening is conditioning. The best way to prevent these injuries from happening is conditioning. –Running, regimented weight lifting, and other activities help an athletes body get ready for the season. This should be started before pre-season. Also, fundamentals for the sport should be understood by the player. Athletes need to understand their body. Athletes need to understand their body. –In my interview with Kevin Murphy, athletic trainer at Haverford High School, he told me the most important aspect is to know when your body has enough and you should slow down. Warm-ups and cool-downs are very important.

The biggest part of treatment is physical therapy. The biggest part of treatment is physical therapy. –Physical therapy is necessary to strengthen the muscles and bones back to full strength. –Without physical therapy muscles and tendons don’t recover correctly and risk for another injury elevates.

Why They Are Happening 58% of high schools across the country do not employ an athletic trainer. 58% of high schools across the country do not employ an athletic trainer. –There is one athletic trainer for every 5500 athletes at the high school level. There are three models that are being considered that will change this There are three models that are being considered that will change this 1.Gold Standard 2.ATC/teacher model (with the fast track approach) 3.Clinic Outreach Program

Throughout my research I have learned a lot about the process of an injury to high school athletes. Throughout my research I have learned a lot about the process of an injury to high school athletes. The information that I gathered helped me understand the full dimensions of the injury process I went through.
