Population pyramids

Population pyramids present a quick picture of a country's population distribution by age and sex. We are able to forecast and anticipate future events in a country by using the population pyramids. It is also able to identify past events that might have caused major changes in the population of a country.

An unusual dynamic is that as countries (or even families) become wealthier, they have a tendency to have fewer babies. Children are no longer needed to work on the farm or to take care of their parents when they get too old to work. Stage II Stage IV Stage III

Another interesting fact is that as women gain rights in society, the population growth generally drops (and the country’s income increases.) Just as in the USA, as women join the professional workforce, they generally have fewer children.

What would account for the large number of children in the age? End of World War II THE BABY BOOM!!!

Note the movement of the baby boomers. Is the US population growing in the next 50 years? Remember, we are developed. Don’t forget: IMMIGRATION! Boomers

Can you anticipate what the future holds for one of the world’s most densely populated developing countries?

What accounts for China’s drop in percentage of population growth? Can you see the major problem China faces now and in the future regarding population? # of males to females!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boomers. What does the future hold for the population of Germany?

How will a refusal to allow immigration effect Japan in the future?

Mammoni: “Mama’s Boy”

What could account for such an unusual shaped population pyramid?

How is this population pyramid different from Italy’s?

Helpful Hints… A. Ann Arbor, MI - University of Michigan B. Buffalo county, SD - Crow Creek Indian Reservation, one of the poorest counties in the United States C. Punta Gorda, FL - retirement community D. Leavenworth, KS - United States Penitentiary E. Manhattan, NYC - wealthy downtown, few large families F. Nothhamton, MA - Smith College, an all girls college G. Fort Bragg, NC - United States Army Fort H. Springfield, IL - average American city

After completing your population pyramid, look at the information critically and answer these questions. Where is the bulk of the population found. Study the dependency ratio and how it will affect the future of the country. Is there a male/female imbalance What will be important trends to plan for in the future. What region of the world is the country found in. How can planners make adjustments to their pyramids of the future. Is your country an MDC or LDC? Name your country.
