THE PRINCE OF EGYPT By Hannah Taylor

THE PRINCE OF EGYPT – DELIVER US

THE PRINCE OF EGYPT - OUTLINE In this animated retelling of the Book of Exodus, Egyptian Prince Moses (Val Kilmer), upon discovering his roots as a Jewish slave, embarks on a quest to free his people from bondage. When his plea is denied by his brother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes), the new pharaoh, a series of horrific plagues strike Egypt. Moses finally leads the Israelites to freedom by parting the Red Sea and drowning the Egyptian army. God then gives Moses the Ten Commandments, a list of rules for his people to live by.

THE PRINCE OF EGYPT – BUDGET AND BOX OFFICE FIGURES The budget of The Prince of Egypt is estimated to be between 60 – 70 million USD On its opening weekend, the film grossed $14.5 million for a $4,658 average from 3,118 theatres, earning second place at the box office, behind You've Got Mail. Due to the holiday season, the film gained 4% in its second weekend, earning $15.1 million and finishing in fourth place. It had a $4,698 average from 3,218 theatres. It would hold well in its third weekend, with only a 25% drop to $11,244,612 for a $3,511 average from 3,202 theatres and once again finishing in fourth place. The film closed on May 27, 1999 after earning $101.4 million in the United States and Canada with an additional $117.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $218.6 million. The Prince of Egypt was the second non-Disney animated feature to gross over $100 million in the U.S. after Paramount/Nickelodeon's The Rugrats Movie.

THE PRINCE OF EGYPT – OPINION Overall, I think The Prince of Egypt is a wonderful film! The animation is flawless and the music is beautiful. I believe it tells the story really well, especially because it is a biblical film. As a non-Disney film it has times where it can be dark, like in the beginning scene where they were whipping the slaves, just to add to the severity. I can’t think of any bad points aside from more character development.
