Ms. Robinson’s 4th-5th grade Science Lesson

Objectives and Standards Understand the life cycles of plants, animals, and humans. Sequence the stages of all 3 life cycles. Life Science(LS) Ohio Extended Standards LS.35.3a- Recognize how a stage in the life cycle supports the survival of plant or animal LS.35.3b- Sequence the stages of an animal or plant life cycle from egg to adult LS.35.3c- Identify a stage in the life cycle of an animal or plant.

Plant Life Cycle

Germination Project Discussion Questions: •a few seeds •paper towel •stapler •plastic bag (the kind with the zipper works best) •ruler •a half cup of water Discussion Questions: • Predict what you would observe if you tried to germinate the seeds in the dark. • What is the job of each part of the germinator? • Do you think the plants would continue to grow if you kept them in the bag forever? First, fold a paper towel so that it just fits inside the bag. Put it into the plastic bag. Take your ruler and measure 3 inches from the top of the bag and staple a bunch of staples in a row. Now you have a mini-pocket, 3 inches deep, with paper sticking out. This is where your seeds are going to sit. Then, pour the half cup of water into the bag so that your seeds have something to drink. Then it gets heavy. Then, take your seeds and put them in that mini-pocket. Zip up your bean bag so no air can escape or get into it, sealing the mini-pocket. Tape them to a window and watch your seeds. When you can see the roots and stems, your seeds have germinated. Plant them in a pot or in the ground and see if they grow! http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.stru.germinator/germinator/
