Objective Develop the list of high-priority safety improvement projects – For locations identified in Step 2 – Using the most appropriate countermeasure indentified in Step 3 2 Element 1, Step 4: Prioritize Projects

Outcome Safety project for each “at-risk” candidate location. The roll-up of the individual projects creates the systemic safety program for the agency’s system. 3 Element 1, Step 4: Prioritize Projects

Data Needs A basic understanding of your agency’s priorities, practices, and policies as they relate to project and program development. Current information relating to expected implementation costs and estimated crash reduction associated with the various safety improvement strategies. 4 Element 1, Step 4: Prioritize Projects

Element 1: Step 4, Task 1 Create A Decision Process Purpose: Create a decision process to select countermeasures – May consider traffic, geometric, crash history when setting criteria Provide a measure of consistency for applying countermeasures for “at-risk” locations. Element 1: Step 4, Task 1 6

Element 1: Step 4, Task 2 Develop Safety Projects Purpose: Select countermeasures for safety investments and determine how to efficiently bundle projects in a design package for contract letting. Element 1: Step 4, Task 2 10

Element 1: Step 4, Task 2 Develop Safety Projects Process: 1.Apply the decision process (Step 4, Task 1) to identify a specific countermeasure(s) for each “at- risk” site. 2.At each site, document countermeasure(s) selected, estimated implementation cost, and a summary of the risk factor scoring. 3.Decide how to efficiently bundle various projects together into one design package for contract letting.
