Summary Sydney Carton is sitting in a room talking with Barsad, while Mr. Lorry and Mr. Cruncher sit in the next room. Mr. Cruncher is scolded by Mr. Lorry for living a secret life (grave robbing) outside of his job at Tellson’s. Mr. Cruncher then argues that there could be many doctors that take part in grave robbing, who work at Tellson’s. Amends are made between Mr. Lorry and Mr. Cruncher when Mr. Cruncher says that if Mr. Lorry lets his son, young Jerry Cruncher, receive his own job at Tellson’s, he will become a gravedigger to make up for the graves he un- dug.

Summary (Cont.) Once Barsad has left, Carton tells Mr. Lorry and Cruncher that he has made arrangements to go see Darnay before he is executed but asks that Lucie not be informed. Mr. Lorry begins to weep as the realization of Darnay's second arrest sinks in. Carton tells him in a sincere tone that he thinks of him as a father-figure who has lived a great life, and that he will be mourned and remembered when he dies. Carton thinks about how someone who has not obtained the love of someone else, has wasted their life, and Mr. Lorry agrees. Carton wanders around Paris, thinking of Lucie. He goes into a chemist’s shop and purchases a mysterious substance. The words of the priest at Carton’s father’s funeral go through his mind: “I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die.”

Summary (Cont.) Carton helps a little girl cross the street, and she gives him a kiss. The words of the priest still go through his mind. Carton wanders around until it is time to go to Darnay’s trial. The judge reveals that Darnay’s accusers are the Defarges and Dr. Manette. Dr. Manette is immediately shocked and denies ever having done such a thing. Mr. Defarge takes the stand and tells the court about the letter he found hidden in 105 North Tower of the Bastille.
