BRIEF HISTORY Before 1996, no digital connection at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, (OAUIFE), Nigeria. The intervention of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy in 1996 brought about the ICTP/OAUIFE Computer network, by dial-up, with 3 subnets. In 1999, OAUIFE acquired a VSAT symmetric connection with a 19.2 kbps with 8 subnets. In the year 2001, the bandwidth was increased to 64kbps uplink and 128kbps downlink, asymmetric connection. 2002, 7 new subnets to be added with 128kbps uplink, 512kbps downlink and many Cybercafes.

E-LIBRARY Remote access to the library. The faculty of Agriculture e-library AGRICULTURE Improvement in crop and animal Production. Harvested crops and livestock are advertised on the intranet and sold to members of the university community at very affordable prices.

CONCLUSION The benefits of Information Technology (IT) can not be easily exhausted. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with in the field of IT in Nigeria. As a result of this, the government appointed the Pioneer Director of the Information Technology and Communications Unit in OAUIFE, Prof. G.O. Ajayi, as the Director of the newly established National Information Technology Development Agency in Nigeria.
