What is Irony?

IRONY is all around us... Today we will: 1. Define three types of irony 2. Analyze a song about irony 3.Write & perform your own ironic skits. 4. Answer the question: what’s the point of irony as a literary device?

Irony is... “an outcome of events contrary to what was or what might have been expected. The essential feature of irony is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression and the context of which it occurs.”

Some personal examples of Irony when the exact opposite of what you intend to happen occurs!

There are 3 types of irony: SITUATIONAL DRAMATIC VERBAL

Now it’s your turn... In small groups of 4, write your own 2 minute skit that demonstrates an example of irony. You will have 5 minutes to write your skit and then you will perform it for the class. After presenting, the class will determine which of the three ironies was presented in your skit. Which skit was most ironic?
