Wellingborough Zoo This zoo was opened in 1943 and closed in 1970.

Why did it shut down? 1.2 men broke in to the zoo and one of the men put his hand out to stroke the leopard but it bit him. 2.Flies were attracted to the dirty cages. 3.They were losing a lot of money. The zoo shut down in December 1970.

How much did it cost to get in? 7 (old ) pence.

Unusual Happenings Simba the lion went to the cinema and the pub. He was allowed to sit at the table and have lunch. Chimps had tea parties.

Terry My next door neighbour Terry used to work in a garage next door to the zoo. He used to jump over the orchard fence and go to the zoo. He could hear the noisy birds in the pond. He said there was a bus stop right next to the zoo entrance. Terry said “having a zoo in Wellingborough was very special and exciting.”

This is a monument to the zoo. It is in Morrisons which is where the zoo used to be.

We tried to find evidence of the penguin enclosure and this is what we found. We didn’t know if we had found the right thing!
