What is a simple machine? Section 5-1

Machines Makes work easier by changing the size of a force, the direction of a force, or the speed of a force.

Simple Machines

Force Effort force – the force you apply to a machine. A small force can be used to overcome a large force. Resistance force – the force which opposes the effort force.

Mechanical advantage Machines help by multiplying your effort force. The number of times a machine multiplies the effort force is mechanical advantage (MA). MA = resistance force /effort force.

Simple Machines Most machines are made up of two or more of the 6 simple machines. 1. Lever 2. Pulley 3. screw 4. Inclined plane 5. Wedge 6. Wheel and axle
