Rhythm Pie Music and Math

The whole note is like a whole pie. The whole note last four (4) beats. It’s sound is = Ta-ah-ah-ah. w w

The half note is like cutting the pie in half. A half note gets two beats. It’s sound is ta-ah! It takes two half notes to make one whole note! h h h =

If you cut the pie into 4 equal parts those parts are called quarters! The quarter note is like one piece of the pie. It gets one sound to a beat. It’s sound is ta. q qq Q = ta

If you cut the quarters into equal parts you have one eighth of the pie! Two eighth notes put together are equal to one quarter note. In other words ti-ki = ta. ti ki q

more pieces to share As you keep cutting the pie into equal parts the pieces get smaller! However, there are more pieces to share! There are 16 pieces here! That’s like 16 th notes. It takes four 16 th notes just to make 1 quarter note. 16th In other words ti-ri-ti-ri = ta. ti ri Q =

Rests are the opposite of notes! Whole rest = 4 beats of silence-like an empty pie pan. Half rest = 2 beats of silence-one half of the pie is gone. Quarter rest = 1 beat of silence- ¼ of the pie is gone. There are also eighth 1/8 7 and sixteenth 1/16 rests. g.

Lets play some rhythm patterns using the notes we’ve learned.
