What is Communism? Communism is an economic system in which no one individual owns something, but in which the society as a whole owns it. The idea of Communism came from German philosopher, Karl Marx in There is no difference in salary between Intellectual and labor jobs, to promote exact human equality. Capital is redistributed among individuals equally.

Post-WWI The Western European countries along with the United States send troops to Russia to try and save the nation. They are too late, the Bolsheviks wipe out the royal family, including Czar Nicholas. Communism slowly begins to take control of Mother Russia.

Communist Party Forms ● Back in the United States, veterans were returning home ● Workers who were avoiding striking because of the war started to demand wage increases to equal with the spiraling inflation. ● 3,300 postwar strikes throughout the U.S. ● In 1919 a group of radicals formed the “Communist Labor Party” ● The leader of the group against American radicalism and the communist labor party was A. Mitchell Palmer who was determined that no Bolshevik revolution would happen in the U.S

Palmer’s Efforts , Palmer conducted a series of raids on individuals he believed were dangerous to the American people and government. He deported 249 Russian immigrants without a reason. The F.B.I was created under the leadership of J.Edgar Hoover which was sponsored by Palmer. In January of 1920, federal agents broke into the homes of suspected anarchists without search warrants, jailed labor leaders, and held about 5,000 citizens without respecting their right to legal counsel. The climate set by Palmer and Hoover could not be contained. Still agitated by wartime propaganda, members of the American public took matters into their own hands

The Sacco-Vanzetti case Two shoe warehouse workers are killed during a robbery. Police suspect two Italian men, known as Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. They proclaimed they were innocent, and protest outraged this was political prejudice because the men were anarchist and socialist. A man from a gang admits to killing the workers, but Sacco and Vanzetti still don’t get retrial. Sacco and Vanzetti are executed 6 years later.

Outrage is sparked
