LHC machine status ~ Daily Summary ~ Daily beam commissioning meeting Week 42 - October 13 th, 2015 CERN, Geneva, CH M. Lamont and S. Redaelli for the LHC commissioning teams

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, Activities of the last 24h 08h00 → ~12h00: Access for QPS and recovery 12h00 → 17h00: Pilot run through 90 m cycle - Overall rather smooth. Issue with timing table for de-squeeze. - Collisions found in 5 then, spurious dump from BLM. 17h00 → 07h30: Long fill with 3 nominal: collimator alignment Roman pot alignment, data taking with “close pots”. - Cycle with nominal smooth. - Collimator alignments in 3 configurations - Pots alignment and data taking, then dumps by the RQF.A78 earth fault. - Access for inspection and the fault was present for 10 min.

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, m operational cycle Ramp De-squeeze Collision Q ch Nominal ramp (nominal Q=(.28,.31), Q’=5) Xing IR1/5 50μrad TCTP align IR1/5 TCTP align IR1/2/5/8 XRP alignment Total of TCTP alignments = 32. With BPMs!

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, Pilot cycle Ramped 3 probes and exercised the full cycle to 90m. New beam process structure with Xing change before the optics change ↦ intermediate point to check collimator align. Hiccup with the optics timing tables: sequence task limitation (max 2096s, required 2100s). Quickly fixed by manual adjustments, to be followed up. BLM problem: One of the processing modules (BLETC) in surface building SR7 has been replaced. Its commmunication link with the tunnel installation started having many dropped packages and eventually lost its redundancy. (Most probably this is the first BLM false beam dump of the year) Took also the opportunity to test for the first time with Matteo the trimming of settings (had to generate the MASTER after the change of the serial number) outside the CCC and using an MCS role. Test was successful. Christos & Steve

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, Orbit at the TCTP’s A. Valloni A. Mereghetti Simulated offset in unit sigma Measured offset: agree

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, Collimator alignment Ramp Align 1 Align 2 Align 3 All TCTP aligned at constant gap values, using BPMs

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, Roman pot alignment Setup for alignment: Primaries at ~4.5 sigmas TCSP-6 at 5 sigma (for XRPH data taking) Standard pot alignment, then pots retracted to “close settings” for data taking. Alignment of all pots completed: Both ALFA (4) and TOTEM (18) pot alignment completed. Hiccup with TCP collimator limits to be checked. Dump during data taking: TOTEM ok for elastic data taking ALFA wishes for more time…

S. Redaelli, LHC meeting, Plan Do we need to repeat the ‘alignment’ fill for more data taking?
