Types of Writing Narrative Descriptive Expository Persuasive

Narrative Writing Narrative writing is the type of writing that tells a story.

Descriptive Writing Descriptive Writing is used to create a vivid picture of an idea, place, thing, or person.

Expository Writing Expository writing is to-the-point and factual. This writing includes definitions, instructions, and directions.

Persuasive writing Persuasive writing is a more sophisticated type of writing that can be called debate writing. The idea is to express an opinion in a way that convinces the reader to see it the same way as the writer.

Writing Structure Organization is your skeleton of your writing. How your writing will be organized.

Text Structure Sequence – uses time and numerical order for organization. Description – is used to describe the characteristic features and events of a specific subject or a general category. Cause and Effect – is used to show causal relationships between events. Compare and Contrast – is used to explain how two or more object, events, or positions in an argument are similar or different. Problem and Solution – requires writers to state a problem and come up with a solution.

Lovett’s writing structure Hook (beginning) (Introduction) – is used to draw the reader into the writing piece. Good writers know how to hook their readers by using dialogue, flashback, description, inner thoughts, and jumping right into the action. Tell – stating what you will be talking about. (directly or indirectly) Explain – is to make the information plain and clear Conclusion – Sum it up and bring the piece to an end.
