Experimental Medicine Student Orientation 2015/2016 Welcome to our program!

Being off-campus Experimental Medicine has students at many different locations:

Being a MSc student 18 cr. thesis + 12 cr. coursework = 30 credits total Continuous enrolment in MEDI549 (MSc Thesis “course”) Supervisory committee: Supervisor + 2 member (Present your research proposal as early as possible!) Supervisory committee needs to meet every year MSc Thesis Defense

Coursework requirements 12 credits (4 courses) - MEDI 501 mandatory - MEDI 502 mandatory - 3 credits MUST be credits CAN BE or 500+ ALL STUDENTS: Responsible Conduct of Research Course!!! By 2 nd year at the latest

Transfer from MSc to PhD Possible after one year in the MSc and no later than second year of MSc Requirements: 80%+ average in 12 credits of coursework 80%+ in each of 9 credits 9 credits at 500+ level Clear evidence of research ability Approval from Supervisory Committee

Being a PhD student Continuous enrolment in MEDI649 (PhD Thesis “course”) Supervisory committee: Supervisor + 3 members Supervisory committee needs to meet every year (Present your research proposal as early as possible!) Comprehensive Exam (and advancement to Candidacy) after 2 years in the PhD program PhD Thesis Defense

Supervisory Committee Meetings The Supervisory Committee needs to meet annually First meeting is to discuss your plans for a research proposal and does not need ‘results’ Report of the meeting needs to be submitted to our office. If composition of committee changes, let us know. 50% of committee members must be UBC faculty Approval is needed for non-UBC faculty and faculty members who are not assistant/associate/full professors

Bi-annual Student Research Day June and November: 10-minutes oral presentations + posters First year students and students who are defending are exempt from presenting Each student should try to present every year Student committee is directly involved in organization and planning

Student Responsibilities Be committed and dedicated Complete Expectations document with your supervisor Meet regularly with supervisor and supervisory committee Maintain good relationship with supervisor and supervisory committee and follow their instructions Stay continuously registered in MEDI549/649 Keep us informed about your progress READ THE NEWSLETTER EVERY WEEK!

Scholarly Integrity Be committed and dedicated Don’t “cheat” – you will be sorry! Scholarly integrity in all aspects of your program is up to you. Keep very diligent with your ‘lab’ notebook – whether that is in a physical book or electronic Be aware of UBC Policy 85 scholarly-integrity/scholarly-integrity scholarly-integrity/scholarly-integrity Attend Responsible Conduct in Research course
