Physical and Virtual Presence – What Does Center Look Like? August 28, 2013 Meeting Recap of Previous Discussions

RECAP FROM EARLIER WEBINARS

Characterizing Stakeholder Groups One of the main takeaways from last week’s open discussion was how multidimensional our stakeholder groups are It might be more effective to define stakeholder groups based on their characteristics, goals, environments, and so on The first thing we would ask our working groups to do at the Symposia is to prepare persona descriptions of the stakeholders they represent To support this, we need to identify a persona template and define the characteristics we want the delegates to describe

Task 1: Define Characteristics We want the groups at both events to advise us on the attributes of their stakeholders First task is to define who the stakeholders are With a short list of stakeholders, prepare a persona description -- suggested attributes include: –Business goals –Perspectives, culture and viewpoints others should understand –Knowledge capabilities – what can they offer to others –Knowledge needs – what do they need from others –Environment in which they work –Delighters and Pain Points –Short narrative or story to help us relate to the stakeholders

Task 2: Activities There was support for several of the activities in the proposal The Center and its extension agents will not be able to support all of them in the first year -- which ones do we invest in first? Three spheres of activities related to knowledge sciences, knowledge engineers and knowledge liaisons Enriching activities within these three spheres but also building important links across them We will prepare the verb-noun short dictionary of possible activities aligned with the three pillars, but we will ask the Symposia participants to add to and then prioritize the list

Task 3. Discovering Engagements Given a list of activities from the working groups, we should be able to determine the kind of engagement models we will need The three spheres of activities translate to three types of engagement models – this came from Bo’s suggestions –Those focused on research that needs to be undertaken or expanded (knowledge sciences) –Those focused on the development of solutions to problems that come from the community or from the research side (knowledge engineering) –Those that address practical applications coming from the field (knowledge management)

Context from Joseph Stiglitz My favorite economist, Joseph Stiglitz, puts it this way: –“Without intellectual property protection, incentives to engage in certain types of creative endeavors would be weakened. But there are high costs associated with intellectual property. Ideas are the most important input into research, and if intellectual property slows down the ability to use others’ ideas, then scientific and technological progress will suffer.” _pg5_12http:// _pg5_12 As a Knowledge Sciences Center our goal is to mobilize and promote ideas. What kinds of intellectual property models should the Center work with? How should we chose which one to work with?

Economic Models For the Center to work, we need to support the interests of our stakeholders There was a consensus around a cooperative economic model as the default model We will also need to consider working with economic models of stakeholders, though, engagement by engagement We need to ask the participants to think through what this means in terms of copyright and patents, open source models, and compensation – do we work with knowledge currencies?

Question 5: Given the Emerging Vision….. I’d like you to close your eyes and consider all that we’ve just reviewed and all the discussions we’ve had. Now, tell me….. What does the center look like physically? Is it one space? Does it have outposts or franchises? What does the center look like virtually?
