Fresca2 Technical meeting, 9 th june 2015, Gdr, relevance for FCC 1 Relevance of SMC/RMC/Fresca2/Inserts for FCC Gijs de Rijk 9 th June 2015 CEA Saclay

Fresca2 Technical meeting, 9 th june 2015, Gdr, relevance for FCC Timeline for HFM in Europe CARE-NED ( ) –Development of European Nb 3 Sn strand (PIT) –Development of technologies for Nb 3 Sn magnets HFM project at CERN ( ) –Develop HFM (conductor, technologies and models) for LHC upgrades and future machines EuCARD WP7 objectives ( ) 2

Fresca2 Technical meeting, 9 th june 2015, Gdr, relevance for FCC Timeline for HFM in Europe EuCARD –Fresca2 is the key part of WP7, is THE demonstrator for >13T –The 6T insert is a bold first step towards 20T (in an 14T outsert) HFM project branching off : HL-LHC, FCC, EuCARD2, etc FCC study kick-off Febr 2013 –Prime line: 16T in 100km for 100TeV cm –Secondary line: 20T in 80km for 100TeV cm Validation steps for FCC already the program: –RMC with 2 coils: 15T on the coil in 2015 –Fresca2: 15T in a large aperture in 2016 –Use of SMC-RMC for FCC studies (quench training, insulation, etc) –EuCARD2 5T HTS accelerator quality magnet Use the left-over strand of Fresca2 for the first 50mm single aperture model for FCC, design to start 2 nd half of 2016, construction

Fresca2 Technical meeting, 9 th june 2015, Gdr, relevance for FCC HFM development for FCC In a logical development line Fresca2 (with SMC-RMC) is a key step towards an FCC with 16T dipoles The EuCARD (1&2) inserts are first and essential steps towards an FCC with 20T dipoles Fresca2 and the Fresca2 conductor give us a kick-start on FCC ! 4
