Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 1 Pesticide Indicators Pesticide Indicators Transition Facility Multi-Beneficiary Statistical Cooperation Programme Lot 2 Expert visit Bratislava, – Part 1

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 2 Content of presentation 1.Minimum information for reporting according to regulation on pesticide statistics 2.Data availability in SR: record-keeping obligation 3.Experiences from Phare 2005 project 4.Expected information from country-wide survey (project team expert)

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 3 1. Regulation on pesticide statistics  Minimum information needed (Annex 2)  Data on plant protection products for specified crop (in our case the wheat) on active substance level  Data on area treated for every active substance  Data on area cultivated (one figure for crop on national level)  No data on timing, methods used, mixing, water used, etc.  Low number of variables gives high opportunity to have data on low geographic level  Field level  Crop variety level  Details to be specified by Eurostat  Reference period  Area treated

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 4 Reference period  Crop season  For wheat from August of previous year to July of actual year  Focus on consumer of agricultural products  Preferred by Eurostat  Calendar year  From January to December  Focus on environmental protection – link with other fields of environmental statistics, which are composed for other environmental area

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 5 Area treated  Total area treated  Every application is counted to area treated  For instance: we have 1 hectare of cultivated area and the crop was treated 5 times with the same active substance, the total area treated will be 5 hectares  Basic area treated  Area cultivated minus area, where the application by the active substance was not used  For instance: we have 1 hectare of cultivated area and the crop was treated 5 times with the same active substance, the total area treated will be 1 hectare  Preferred by Eurostat

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 6 2. Data availability in SR: record-keeping obligation  Pesticide usage records in SR  Obligation for all professional agriculture producers  Decree of Ministry of Agriculture  Responsible organizations  Central Control and Testing Institute of Agriculture  Other institutions (monitoring of residues)  SOSR – data reporter according to pesticide regulation (in legislation process)  Details of pesticide use record on next slides

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 7 Pesticide usage record in SR (1)  Identification information  Name  Physical body  Corporate body  District  Name of crop (separate report for every crop)

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 8 Pesticide usage record in SR (2)  Pesticide usage information  Date of application  Field, greenhouse  Growing area  Growing stage of plant  Pestilential factor  Intensity of affection

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 9 Pesticide usage record in SR (3) Pesticide usage record in SR (3)  Pesticide usage information  Name of product  Used rate per hectare, concentration of product  Used amount of the product  The used amount of water per hectare  Treated area or treated amount of seed etc.

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 10 Pesticide usage record in SR (4)  Application and coterminous crops  The way of application of the product  Names of coterminous crops  Growing stage of coterminous crops

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic Experiences from Phare 2005 project  Exhausting questionnaire  Effort to cover most of data available  Effort to cover most of variables listed in  Effort to cover most of variables listed in Guidelines For The Collection Of Pesticide Usage Statistics Within Agriculture & Horticulture  Two pages:  Identification of farm and data on crops  Data on pesticide usage  No written methodological notes for respondents  Enumerators – Inspectors of Control and Testing Institute of agriculture (trained stuff) – interviews  Information on high quality level – response rate 100%  One training session of inspectors

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 12 PUS questionnaire 1. Name of farm 2. ID number 3.Municipality 4.District A. Information on farm High standard Low standard Name of crop Sowing area Type of food Variety Previous crop Organic manure Sowing date Sowing rate Sowing method Harvest date B. Information on crop

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 13 PUS questionnaire (2) Nr. App. date Name of field Stage of crop Reason of use Name of product Used rate Used amount Used amount of water Treate d area App. method App. round C. Information on used products

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic 14 Problems related to questionnaire  Two pages were not linked up together:  First page on field level (or crop variety area level)  Data on usage (second page) were presented on whole farm level (crop area level)  Calculation possible only on farm level (problem when calculating basic area treated)  Application method – classification of method used (needed for data processing) did not cover all methods  Application round – sometimes not understood  Application round = number (name) of multiply application (all applications by different products together have the same number (name) of application

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic Expected information from county-wide survey  Please, give us your proposal for variables to be included in questionnaire for national wheat survey
