Safety In the Science Lab 1

Laboratory Safety it is really important to learn laboratory safety at school we are going to learn to identify safety issues safety rules the Hazardous Household Products Symbol, and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

General Science Rules No eating or drinking in the lab No running, pushing, or shoving No dangly, or bulky clothing Long hair must be tied back No open toed shoes or sandals Never take anything home with you Always remain calm 4

Before the Experiment Always read the lab thoroughly BEFORE you come into class Clear your workspace of unnecessary stuff – usually you will not bring your books to class on lab days All you need is a pencil and your lab Know where all the safety equipment is located Follow the teacher’s instructions Inspect glassware – DO NOT use broken glass Always wear your goggles and apron Goggles are not to be taken off until instructed by the teacher  failure to do so may result in a mark of 0 for the lab 5

During the Experiment Make sure your clothes are out of the way NEVER touch or taste any of the substances If you are asked to smell something WAFT the odor to your nose Wear all safety equipment Always monitor your experiment If something happens TELL THE TEACHER Use the fume hood when instructed Turn the gas off if you are not using it  – – ON = parallel to nozzle – – OFF = perpendicular to nozzle 6

After the Lab Clean up your area, including the sink and around the sink Always rinse glass wear 3 times Put away all CLEAN equipment where you are instructed to Return any unused chemicals to your teacher Put waste chemicals in the designated area WASH YOUR HANDS!!! 7

Lighting a Bunsen Burner C onnect hose to burner and gas nozzle Make sure there are no kinks in hose Bottom valve controls gas  open ½ way Body tube control O 2  open ½ way 8 Light with flint striker by placing it over the burner Adjust the flame to have a compact blue flame If it doesn’t light turn it off, wait a few seconds, then try it again If heating a test tube, hold it on its side and move it back and forth through the flame – always point the tube away from people

Things to Know: Toxins can enter your body through any of the 4 ways: Absorption through skin Inhalation through lungs Eating or drinking Direct injection into blood stream 9

Hazardous Household Products Symbols container is dangerous; it can explode leading to serious injury container is dangerous; it can explode if heated or punctured leading to serious injury (eg. aerosol cans) product inside the container is dangerous (see below) product is corrosive and will burn skin, eyes, throat or stomach (eg. oven cleaner, bathroom cleaner) product is flammable and will catch fire easily if it is near heat, flames or sparks (eg. hair spray, gasoline) product is poisonous, will cause illness or death if ingested (eg. windshield washer fluid, furniture polish)

WHMIS Safety Labels: 11 Compressed Gas Flammable And Combustible Material Oxidizing Agent (makes things burn) Poisonous & Infectious Material (Immediate Toxic Effect) Posionous & Infectious Material (Material Causing Other Toxic Effects) Biohazardous Infectious Material Corrosive Material Dangerously Reactive Material

In Case of Emergency… Emergencies can consist of: 1) 1) Fires4) Burns 2) 2) Spills5) Cuts 3) 3) Glass breakage 1) Fires a) a) Small to medium fires can be handled by one of the many different pieces of safety equipment: – – Extinguisher – – Blanket – – Beaker – – Sand 12

b) Large fires the engulf much of the room should be handled by the professionals We will: Pull fire alarm Evacuate 2) Chemical spills: a) Chemical spills in the classroom: Some chemicals need to be neutralized before they can be cleaned up Acids are neutralized with baking soda (under my sink) Bases are neutralized with vinegar (under my sink) Others: special instructions on day of lab 13

b) Chemical spills on you: Eyes & Face: Rinse off for 15 minutes in sink or eyewash Hands & Feet: Wash with water in sink for minutes Abdomen, Chest & Back: Shower in Science Prep Room Make sure you remove any chemical soaked clothing first 14 Always Tell Your Teacher If You Get Chemicals Spilled On You!

3) Glass Breakage: If there is glass that breaks you need to sweep it up and put it in the broken glass bucket 4) Burns: a) Heat Burns  Run it under cold water b) Chemical Burns  Run it under water 5) Cuts: Always cut AWAY from yourself Clean it out Call first aid attendant Bandage it up 15

Spot the Safety Violations!
