RICHARD NIXON’S RESIGNATION SPEECH Analyzed By: Jamal Pass

SPEAKER Richard Nixon was born in California in 1913 Nixon was the 37 th President of the Untied States (PoTUS) Main contributor to “Watergate” Ran One and a half terms as President with his first being very successful “This is the 37 th time I have spoken to you from this office”

OCCASION Speech delivered on August 7 th 1974 in The Oval Office of the White House Main reason is Resignation Underlying factors are scandals which he alludes to “Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate”

AUDIENCE His main audience is the American people He is also speaking to his cabinet and other executives.

PURPOSE To address his resignation “I shall resign the Presidency” To welcome in Ford as President “…he will deserve the help and the support of all of us” To remind the public of his achievements “Sometimes I have succeeded”

SUBJECT Nixon resigning as President of the United States The achievements of his congress and himself Welcoming Vice President Ford into Presidency

TONE He is very monotone while speaking showing a very regretful and solemn tone He has a slight happy and uplifting tone in the end. He uses words such as “hoped”, ”kinship”, and “fortunate” to convey a “happy” tone.

ETHOS Begins by establishing the ethos he had lost due to Watergate “This is the 37th time I have spoken to you from this office” Claim he did “what was best for the Nation” in each of his endeavors, even in Watergate and such. Lists off his achievements with many anaphoras of “we have”,“I have” and also “I hope”

PATHOS He mentions his family and his privacy as a main issue as why he is resigning and says he only wants what’s best for them and his country. “to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication” He also states “I feel a great sadness that I will not be here” in referring to his resignation.

CONCLUSION The speech was not very successful or engaging. It being emotionless took away the sincerity out of it which also took out the believability. The speech was focused too much on past achievements instead of plans for the future or just an insight of what should’ve happened.
