Equations

An equation is a mathematical statement that shows 2 quantities are equal. An equation contains an equal sign. 12 – 3 = 9 Numerical 3a = 30 Algebraic Equations

Equations Equals Sign (=) Means that the amount is the same on both sides = 6 5 – 2 = 3

An Equation is like a balance scale. Everything must be equal on both sides = Equations

When the amounts are equal on both sides it is a true equation = Equations

When the amounts are unequal on both sides it is a false equation = Equations

When an amount is unknown on one side of the equation it is an open equation. 7 n + 2 = Equations

When you find a number for n you change the open equation to a true equation. You solve the equation. 7 n + 2 = 5 Equations

Are these equations true, false or open? = = 17 N + 4 = 7 12 – 3 = v = – 6 = 9 false true open false open true Equations

An equation i s a statement of equality between two quantities. x + 2 = 5 “ is the same as ” =x + 25 fulcrum Equations

= Could x equal 6? Equations

=x + 25 What does x equal? Equations Solution : x = 3

= + 25 What does x equal? Equations Solution : x = 3 3

Equations A solution is the final answer to an equation, or the value of the variable. Example: 3a = 30 a = 10 is the solution

Equations Is x = 5 a solution? ? ?

Equations Is x = 6 a solution? ? ?

Equations Inverse operation – the opposite operation used to undo the first = 7 7 – 4 = 3 6 x 6 = 36 / 6 = 6

Equations How to solve an addition equation Use the inverse operation for addition which is subtraction m + 8 = = 4 m = =

Equations How to solve an subtraction equation Use the inverse operation for subtraction which is addition m - 3 = = 8 m = = 5

Equations Solve these equations using the inverse operations n + 4 = 7 n – 5 = 4 n + 4 = 17 n – 6 = 13 n + 7 = 15 n – 8 =
