Today’s Objective Today, I will be able to plan my persuasive essay. I’ll know I’ve got it when I can use the persuasive essay organizer to organize my claim, opinion(s), and reasons.

Today’s Teaching Point Good persuasive writers take the time to plan out their writing before they start to draft. Many writers use organizers to help them keep track of their ideas. Planning is crucial to any piece of writing, especially writing for tests like the NJASK.  Get in the habit of planning for each prompt to ensure the strongest possible response.

Introduction (Paragraph One) State IssueAmerican public schools should have a longer school days. Who is your audience?School Districts ThesisBy extending the day, schools can improve student health, increase motivation, and narrow the achievement gap. Three Reasons (be general, in order of weakest to strongest – save your best for last Improve student health without compromising academic achievement Boost student motivation Narrow and eventually close the achievement gap

Persuasive Writing Organizer Body Paragraph One – Reason ONE ( a strong reason) Reason: Improve student health without compromising academic achievement PROVE IT! Evidence: Phys. Ed. Programs have been cut in favor of more class time Center for Disease Control & Prevention – 60% of children ages 9-13 do not participate in any physical activity outside of school Gym is a great way to relieve energy Battle obesity

Persuasive Writing Organizer Body Paragraph Two– Reason TWO( a stronger reason) Reason: Boost student motivation PROVE IT! Evidence: Incorporate fun articles as well as standardized test prep (fun!) One-on-One time (Mrs. Ingargiola, “With so little time & so much to do, it’s hard to meet the needs of all of my learners. A longer school day would mean more time to conference & help my students, & that means far fewer struggling, frustrated kids. It sounds like a win-win!”

Persuasive Writing Organizer Body Paragraph Three– Reason THREE( your strongest reason) Reason: Narrow and eventually close the achievement gap PROVE IT! Evidence: Students from low-income families are falling further behind in their education (can’t afford outside help) Time to Learn: How a New School Schedule is Making Smarter Kids, Parents, and Safer Neighborhoods “Adding to the school day allows schools to give them [students] the same individualized attention, the same added homework help and tutoring if needed.” Well rounded students need instruction in arts, music, technology Better math skills!

Conclusion (Paragraph Five) RESTATE Thesis (Your Opinion on the Issue): By extending the school day, educators can improve student health and students’ motivation towards school and life, and narrow and eventually close the achievement gap. URGE READER TO TAKE ACTION: School districts should extend school hours. Clincher Closing: Students don’t need new school systems; they simply need a little more time in their schools.
