Tiffany Ring

Design & solder your ring Using skills from your last unit, create a really awesome ring with a spot for your setting. SEE THE IDEAS ON THE LAST ORANGE PAGE IN THE BLUE BOOK BEFORE DESIGNING! The setting needs to be designed so it will sit on the side of a piece of wire, not on top. It can be touching on two sides but can not be squeezed in, or it will collapse when heated. It should touch the wire in two places. Take care when bending the wire not to dent the square edges with the pliers. Use medium or hard solder to solder the wire ring parts together. Use anti-flux as necessary. You should know where to use this by now. Solder all the ring parts together before soldering on the setting.

Square Wire

Wire needs to sit flush with the base of the setting. Notice that the square wire is only touching the setting at one spot, making this difficult to solder on straight. You will need to notch the wire (see next slide).

Notch out a spot for your setting Go about a third of the way in to the wire, using a round needle file. The setting should fit right against the wire on the sides. The bottom of the setting should be flush with the bottom of the wire. SEE PHOTOS ON P IN BLUE BOOK FOR INFO.

Solder Setting Into Ring Hold band upside down in third hand, with setting face down in the notch. Put two flattened pieces of X or E solder at the joints. Heat the block until the solder flows. If the solder sticks to the band but not the setting, the setting is not hot enough. Focus a little more on the setting (but don’t melt it down!)

Set your stone See me for this!

Buff your ring Use only the flex shaft to buff your tiffany ring. Hold your thumb over the setting so you don’t accidentally tear the stone out. You probably don’t need a guard with the flex shaft. Buff around the setting with your Sunshine cloth.
