Why do you think this is on the Australian flag?

Write down anything in GREEN. Today, Australia is one of the largest nations in the British Commonwealth. This relationship dates back to British Imperialism in the 18 th century. Although countries like France and Holland sent explorers to the South Pacific, Britain made the biggest colonial impact. Captain James Cook is the most famous British explorer to make voyages to Australia; he set up a colony near Botany Bay. Many of the first settlers in the British colonies of Australia were convicts; they arrived in the late 18 th century in Botany Bay. Australia developed into a very similar nation to Britain in terms of culture, politics and economy. In 1940, it became officially independent from Britain.

Captain Cook has been seen as a “Man of the Enlightenment” as all of his voyages were missions of increasing knowledge and scientific development. What does this suggest about British motives for exploring and colonising Australia? Stop at 3:32

In groups of 4 or 5, you will research about the development of Australia as part of the British Empire. This will focus on Captain James Cook’s voyages and the early British settlements in the South Pacific. Group Task 1768 Captain James Cook was sent on expedition to S. Pacific Using the evidence around the room, build a timeline of the development of Australia as part of the British Empire.

Plenary Fill in your SOLO Progress Tracker. Be sure to be provide evidence of how you reached that stage. Why do you think people would have claimed that Cook “owned the Pacific”?
