William Henry

Background to William Henry William Henry was an English chemist He lived 1774 to Mr Henry was the son of Thomas Henry and was born in Manchester England. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, in February 1809 Thomas Henry

William Henry Discovery Henry discovered something called "Henry's Law". Henry's law is a "gas law" in physics. The law is: o "At a constant temperature, the amount of a given gas that dissolves in a given type and volume of liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas in equilibrium with that liquid."

William Henry Discovery It is like the fizz (CO 2 ) of 7up leaving the lemonade the pressure is reduced If you go on to study physics or chemistry you should learn about this law.

John Dalton

Background to John Dalton John Dalton was born on 6th September 1766 and died 27th July John Dalton was an English chemist, meteorologist and physicist. John Dalton is best known for his pioneering work in the development of modern atomic theory and his search in colour blindness. People say that John Dalton was probably the most famous scientist of his day. John Dalton, was awarded a fellow of the Royal Society in 1822,

John Dalton's Gas Discoveries Like other scientists Dalton came up with a discovery encapsulated in a law called "Dalton's Law". Dalton's law states that the total pressure applied by the mixture of non-reactive gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of individual gases.

John Dalton's Gas Illustration E.g. Air

James Prescott Joule

Background to James Prescott Joule James Prescott Joule lived from the He was a physicist and brewer who was born in Salford, near Manchester. James was the son of Benjamin Joule and his mother was Alice Joule. His wife was Amelia Joule. He was quite rich. In fact was a privately educated by John Dalton!

James made up two laws that is now called "Joule's Laws". Joule's laws are about heat produced by an electric current and the energy dependence of gas to pressure volume and temperature. Joule’s Law of Internal Energy: Joule’s law of internal energy states that the internal energy of a given quantity of gas depends only on its temperature and is independent of its pressure and volume.

Even more interestingly today energy is measured in Joule's (James's last name). You can find the information a the back of food packets.(kJ)

Ernest Rutherford

Background to Rutherford Ernest Rutheford lived from the 30th August 1871 to 19th October Surprisingly he had 7 siblings. Although he was born in New Zealand he was a british chemist and physicist. Rutherford became known as the father of nuclear physics.

Ernest Rutherford's Inventions Ernest Rutherford discovered a radioactive gas now called Radon. He discovered protons in the year 1918.

Ernest Rutherford's Inventions Ernest Rutherford announces that radioactivity is a manifestation of sub- atomic change. Ernest Rutherford discovered rays from radioactive materials.

Ernest Rutherford's Radon Radon is a radioactive gas Radioactive things are dangerous to humans

Thank you
