Dalton’s Atomic Theory By: Dasha, Meggs, RunkDaddy

Who Was He?  Chemist John Dalton was born September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfield, England. During his early career, he identified the hereditary nature of red- green color blindness. In 1803 he revealed the concept of Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures. Also in the 1800s, he was the first scientist to explain the behavior of atoms in terms of the measurement of weight. Dalton died July 26, 1844 in Manchester, England.

What were the 5 key points of his theory? 1. All elements are made up of atoms 2. All Atoms of a element are Identical. 3. The atoms of a given Element are different to those of all other elements. 4. Different Element's Atoms can combine to form Compounds. 5. Atoms cannot be created, destroyed by chemicals, or split into smaller particles.

What experiment did he do to test his theory?  He worked with different substances. His results suggested that elements combined in certain proportions because they are made of atoms.

Timeline BBetween 1803-1808

How did his theory hold up over time?  Daltons theory has been proven incorrect over time, but the core concepts of his theory are the foundation of modern physical science.  It was later proven that atoms are not indestructible or unchangeable, elements are characterized by the mass of their atoms, and that when elements react, atoms combine in more than one whole-number ratio.
