Treasuring Christ December 6, 2015

2 Peter 1:1-12 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a]to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes thema

2 Peter 1:1-12 fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Introduction We are sons, no longer slaves, we have an inheritance Treasuring Jesus our true cornerstone How we should view Christ, respond to Him in light of our salvation

Treasure Christ Above All Things Peter gets our attention with the word “precious.” V 4: “As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in sight of God chosen and precious.” V 6: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes… ” Treasure Christ above all is God’s response to Christ Should be ours as well! Feeling the preciousness of what you value or what you prize. Do we know what kind of treasure we have in Christ?

Results in Renouncing our Old Way of Life Christ is more valuable to us than all that this earth holds Emotional, affectional treasuring of Christ changes the way you act Spirit-given power to be free from the dominion of sin Be committed to growing in our salvation

We Come to Christ as our Cornerstone Approach Him as our foundation, our hope, our everything Whenever I am called upon to choose between anything in this world and Christ, I choose Christ Things of this world are not my treasure, Christ is my treasure How can I show I treasure Christ above everything else in this situation?

Defines us as a New Race of People A new race, a new ethnicity, and a new people-group To those who do not believe, stone builders rejected is capstone, stone to stumble, rock to fall Not a battle between races, but a clarification of who we are Have to speak the truth but do it in love! Eph 4:15 God is building us into a spiritual house You are part of His chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation

Conclusion Treasuring Christ above all things Results in renouncing our old ways Come to Christ as our cornerstone Defines us as a new race of people
