How Our Body Eliminates Waste and keeps us healthy! Excretory System = Urinary System

Function: Removes or excretes excess water, H 2 O, urea, carbon dioxide, CO 2, and other wastes from our blood. Importance: Harmful chemicals made when the body creates energy must be removed from blood to keep you healthy

 Kidneys – filter out excess water, salt and chemicals as urine  Lungs – filter out carbon dioxide, CO 2, from the blood. (respiratory system)  Skin – excretes water, as sweat, which contains some trace chemical wastes, including urea. (epidermis)

Liquid waste = urine

Function - filter wastes and excess water from the blood. Importance – control the amount of water in body, tell body when to make new red blood cells, take harmful chemicals from blood Other Info – located in back under ribs You have 2 kidneys, but can live with 1 Picture Kidneys

Function - tubes that take urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder. Importance – after the waste is filtered from blood, it must go to the bladder for storage Other Info – each kidney has its own ureter Picture Ureter

Function: a sack that stores urine/liquid waste Importance: Holds urine until you go to the bathroom Other Info: when full, a message is sent to your brain telling you to go to the bathroom Picture Urinary Bladder

Function- small tube that carries urine out of the body. Importance – connects the bladder to the outside of the body, how urine leave body Other Info – about 6mm wide Picture Urethra

 Tiny tubes in the kidneys that filter and clean blood and balance supply of water and salt. (about 1 million per kidney)

1. The ______________ filter waste and excess water from the blood. 2. The tube that carries urine out of the body is called the _____________. 3. The urinary bladder stores ____________ until it is ready to exit the body.

 

Doctors analyze urine for disease;  Normal urine contains water, urea and trace minerals.  Sugar in urine indicates Diabetes  Protein in urine indicates the kidneys are not working and the person, or animal, is very sick.

 HW review Removes Water = Kidneys, Skin Brings Oxygen to blood = Lungs Removes Salt = Kidneys, Skin Stores Urine = Bladder Removes C02 = Lungs Produces Urine = Kidneys Removes Body Heat = Skin

Today’s Goal - To memorize the functions and order of the Kidneys, Ureter, Bladder and Urethra - To learn the difference between URETER and URETHRA

1. What are the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder called? 2. The __________ is the tube that carries urine out of the body. 3. What is the job of the kidneys?
