Hatchet Book by: Gary Paulsen Report by: Celia

Plot  This book is about a 13 year old boy named Brian Robeson.  He is flying in a Cessna 406 bush plane to visit his father in the oil fields of northern Canada.

Plot – continued  Brian learns to not take food for granted and how to make stuff out of the resources he finds on the ground, in trees, or anywhere else.  He is left with no one but himself and his hatchet. The pilot had died of a heart attack during their flight.

Setting  The story takes place in Hampton, New York.  Then it goes into the northern forests of Canada.

Challenges  He gets sprayed by a skunk.  Survives a tornado.  Gets quilled in the leg by a porcupine.

Characters  Brian.  Brian’s mom and dad.  The pilot.  Brian's friend Terry.  The other man that Brian’s mom was with.  The man who saved Brian.

Character-Brian  The protagonist is Brian. His strengths are that he is very resourceful, can find things to eat and keep himself dry.  He has a new and old self: his old self that couldn’t do any thing he said died in the plane crash and his new self was born able to do things better and see the world.

Character – Brian continued  He has a new and old self because his old self cut himself, because he realized that no one is coming for him and he got depressed.  His new self was usually happy and able to hunt better and make bows and live life out in the wilderness.

Opinions  I like the book a lot but I think it should tell more after Brian gets saved.  It should say after Brian gets saved if his mom marries the other man or if other things happen.
