 Much of Western and English-speaking music has roots in English culture  From instrumental to popular music today, much evolved from traditional music in the UK.  “Greensleeves” is a traditional English song, known by most in the English speaking world.  It is a love song dedicated to a woman in green.  Today, many variations are sung, especially during Christmas time.

Alas, my love, you do me wrong, To cast me off discourteously, And I have loved you, oh so long, Delighting in your company, Greensleeves was my delight, Greensleeves was all my joy, Greensleeves was my heart of gold, And who, but my lady Greensleeves.

 Most traditional dances from the UK were danced at celebrations, like weddings, often in groups.  Country dance is a large group of people dancing together, sometimes in couples and then all together.  Traditional dances in America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand come from the tradition.  Some dances also had other social uses.

 Said to imitate the jumping run of a deer.  Was danced after a victory in battle, with soldiers placing their shields and swords on the ground and dancing around them.  Very popular dance for competition around the English speaking world.  Foundation for many popular styles of popular music, like Punk Rock.

 Scene from the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Summer Olympics.  Features classic music and films in British pop culture.  Examples of British music and dance styles from the 18 th century Britain though today.  “Chariots of Fire” (1981) is a classic film, known for its themes of British culture in the Olympics and its famous soundtrack theme song, “Chariots of Fire” by Vangelis.

 Bhangra is originally a folk dance/music from the Punjab region of India/Pakistan.  Popular dance style now in America, Canada and especially in the UK.  Commonly danced at Indian weddings, the music is a mix of traditional music style from India with modern electronic music styles (most usually Hip-Hop)  Many enjoy Bhangra because of the fusion of traditional dance moves with the freedom to dance how you feel!

 The UK has a history of producing many popular Pop and Rock music groups. ◦ The Beatles ◦ Queen ◦ Five ◦ Spice Girls ◦ Westlife  One Direction is one of the most successful pop music groups in history.  Members are both British and Irish.
