It's Our Air Too!

Introduction Young Adult Advocacy Funded by the State Tobacco Control Section Our Goal: Reduce Secondhand Smoke Exposure year olds not in college Our Priority Population: East Palo Alto, Redwood City, North Fair Oaks Bilingual materials in English and Spanish. Latinos are the heart of our community.

It's Our Air Too! Second Hand Smoke SHS kills 65,000 Americans each year. For every 8 smokers, 1 nonsmoker dies from exposure to SHS. CHILDREN exposed to SHS in the home have more colds, flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, chronic coughs, and ear infections than other kids SHS triggers 1 million asthma attacks in CHILDREN each year. More than 400 students in the Ravenswood School District have been identified with asthma.

Four years of work in the community Dozens of businesses and apartments Dozens of presentations to parent groups Education and Social-marketing through churches and childcare agencies Posters, direct mail, movie slides, newspaper ads, café napkins, grocery bags, and t-shirts. Voluntary Policies: 38 Businesses, 19 Apartment Complexes

Survey Results Pretest/Post-Test Survey: 600 San Mateo County Residents % reduction of SHS exposure in the home 39.9% reduction in daily exposure to SHS 37% of respondents still exposed daily 80% of California residents support legislation to restrict SHS exposure 94.2% of respondents support legislation to restrict SHS exposure
