CONCRETE TESTING
Water can effect the workability and strength of concrete
How will you know if you are using too much water?
TESTS!!
Why should you do these tests? PROTECTION!! As a Contractor: If there ends up being trouble with your concrete you want to have proof that you poured it within certain standards. As a Owner: You want to make sure you are getting a quality product. TEST OR IT COULD COST YOU MONEY!!
CONCRETE TESTS COMPRESSION TEST (CYLINDER TEST) MEASURE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE MEASURED BY PSI (LBS. PER SQ. IN.) SLUMP TEST MEASURE WORKABILITY & WETNESS MEASURED BY INCHES
CYLINDER TEST -Tests Compressive Strength -Measured by PSI (Lbs. Per Sq. In.) -Taken to lab -Soaked in water tank -3 are usually made -7 day break -14 day break -28 day break -Minimum 3500 psi when broken on day 28
CYLINDER TEST Write on cylinder -Date -Tester’s Name -Jobsite -Fill with 3 layers and rod each layer 25 times -Try not to move after making -Keep out of direct sun -Take to lab within 24 hrs.
Breaking Test Cylinders at the Lab
SLUMP TEST -Measures workability and wetness of concrete -Measured by inches -A slump of 2-4 inches is usually called for -This test is popular due to the simplicity of the testing apparatus and the procedure
SUMMARY -Too much water can affect the strength of concrete -To check the strength of concrete there are tests that can be conducted -Testing will protect you -A slump test measures the workability and wetness of concrete -A slump test is measured in inches/ 2-4 inches is preferable -A slump tester should be filled in 3 layers./Ea. layer rodded 25 times -A cylinder test will test the compressive strength of concrete -A cylinder test is measured in PSI (Lbs. per Sq. In.) -3 cylinders are usually made/Broken between 7-28 lab -Cylinders must not be moved/Cylinders not set in the sun -Cylinders must be labeled (Date/Name/Jobsite) -Cylinder must be filled in 3 layers/Ea. layer rodded 25 times
THE END! Thank you!!
