Library Publishing Services and Their Readers: Trends and Barriers in the Digital Collections We Create Daniel G. Tracy

"Librarians are embracing their roles in the entire cycle of knowledge creation, dissemination, access, use, and preservation.“ --Joyce Ogburn, Preface to Common Ground at the Nexus of Information Literacy and Scholarly Communication (2013) 2 Survey: To what extent do library publishing services address reader needs, preferences, and behaviors related to digital publications? What barriers do they face?

Broad Trends: the Good News Occurring more than existing literature suggests. 3

The Bad News: Barriers Biggest barrier: priority (48.4%), platform (26.6%) 4

Embracing the Cycle Need to foster cross-unit, intra-library conversation about user needs as well as conversations across institutions. Synergies with just released draft of DLF white paper on “Use and Usability Assessment of Digital Libraries.” Need more systematic provision of feedback and participation of whole community using out-of-the-box solutions. Need to share efforts through publication. 5
