The Water Quality Act of 1987 Molly Murphy Period 2

The Water Quality Act of 1987 is an amendment to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, a.k.a the Clean Water Act, which regulates discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulates quality standards for surface waters. The EPA is in charge of upholding this act.

The Water Quality Act of 1987 stated: Continuation of the Chesapeake Bay Program Establishment of a Great Lakes National Program office and Fish and Wildlife Service Requirement that the EPA do research on harmful effects of pollutants on general health and welfare Requirement that states develop strategies for toxic cleanup in waters that do not meet water quality standards Increase in penalties for violations to the standards Require that the EPA study and monitor the water quality effects attributable to the impoundment of water by dams
