What role do YOU play?
Patterns in literature found around the world Certain character types are also archetypal elements of traditional stories Some critics say that these elements express symbolic truths about the human mind
Hero – protagonist who begins as a humble, non- heroic character. Conquers obstacles and saves the day! Has some kind of quest. Villain – The antagonist; works against the hero either through brute strength or cunning. Mother figure/Father figure/Mentor – Older figures to support and guide the hero. Underdog – The character not expected to do much, but plays a pivotal role. Jester – The comic relief. Rogue – The nice/lovable character that does not always follow the rules.

Put the characters into groups, not by which movie they are in, but by what kind of character they are!
Ask yourself: Why did I group these characters together this way? How do they act in their roles? What do they provide for the story?
