Boolean Logic: And, Or, Not  And = each search result contains all the search terms you enter  Or = Each result contains at least one search term you enter  Not = Results do not contain the term you enter

Examples  Heart and Lung = results contain both heart and lung  Heart or Lung = results contain either heart or lung  Heart not lung = results contain heart but not lung

Using Field Codes

Parentheses  Parentheses tell the database what to search for first.  lung or ((kidney and liver) and skin) = 5912 results  (lung or kidney) and (liver and skin) = 9 results

Stop Words Are Ignored Stop Words:  Articles  Pronouns  Prepositions

Quotation Marks = give exact phrase in search results  “heart lung spots” = results with the phrase “heart lung spots”

Wildcard = Return all variations of a word  Enter a question mark ?  Enter a pound sign #  Example: color? = color and colour

Truncation  Use * to find all forms of a word  Latin* finds both Latina and Latino
