Interviewing Techniques Traditional Interview Team Interview Behavioral Interview

Traditional Interviewing Sometimes interviews follow a more traditional format (quite common with people who are not used to interviewing). In this type of interview the questions are often resume based. It is a good idea to reflect on the sort of answer you might give before an interview. It is also good to have examples from your experience to back your answers.

Traditional Interviewing Example Questions Do you prefer to work in teams or individually? What motivates you? What was your greatest success and how did you achieve it? What has been your biggest failure?

Team Interviewing This team approach means that many different people interview you and then get together to debate whether you are a fit for the job. Sometimes, each person on the interview asks a different set of questions. Other times, they all ask the same thing. This can happen by design, if the organization wants to see whether you change your answers along the way.

Behavioral Interviewing The interviewer asks specific questions seeking information about a candidate’s skills, character and preferences based on examples of past behavior. During the Behavioral interview, questions are directed toward specific experiences.

Behavioral Interviewing Knowledge, Behaviors, Motivations Core Competencies –Attitude, Quality, Teamwork, Decision Making, Stress Tolerance, etc. STAR –Situation or Task the candidate faced –Action the candidate took –Result of the candidate’s action

Examples When was the last time you had conflicting work/school demands? How did you handle it? STAR Answer –S/T – Scheduled to work 25 hours and have group project and final in same week –A – Identified conflict and asked group members if you could take responsibility for beginning phases of project –R – You did research for the project and the group was able to complete the project on time and you worked the 25 hours

Examples Tell me about a time when members of a group you were in wanted to handle a decision in different ways. What did you do? STAR Answer –S/T – Working on software development project and group members wanted to only do some steps of SDLC –A – Organized group meeting to gather pros and cons of proposed solutions; gave examples of past projects that failed by using this solution –R – Team agreed that all steps of SDLC should be followed and received an A on project
