The Beginning of Sci-Fi Today there are many different people who create science fiction movies, novels and games. Stephen Spielberg -E.T. -Close encounters of the third kind -War of the Worlds Suzanne Collins -The Hunger Games But where did sci-fi begin?

The Father of Science Fiction One of the earliest pioneers of science fiction was the French Author, Jules Verne (1828 – 1905). He wrote over 60 science fiction novels most famous of which were: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873)

Jules Verne The adventure in Verne’s novels were based on: some estimations or application, of the science of his time, or some unresolved scientific issue on which to base an adventure story. Advances in science and technology Science fiction is based on scientific and technology advances Scientists are influenced by new fiction concepts Science fiction becomes science fact Verne often attempted calculations of the scientific concepts in his novels which in some cases were close to accurate.

Sci-fi becomes fact Many of the sci-fi concepts that Verne included in his novels have become science fact including: Splashdown spaceships Electric submarines Solar Sails (click for video) Spacecraft Videoconferencing Taser guns Skywriting, and many more

The Scientific Revolution During his time, Jules Verne’s work was extremely popular because of a heightened interest in science that was occurring throughout the scientific revolution. The scientific revolution is an era associated primarily with the 16th and 17th centuries during which new ideas and knowledge in science transforming from medieval and ancient views.

Common Sci-fi themes Types of beings: Clones, extra-terrestrial life, Genetic alteration, super human powers and mutants: X-men, shapeshifters, UFO’s, Alternative realities. Possible Futures: Alien invasion, Apocalyptic events and world- wide disasters. Technologies: Artificial intelligence: robots and stuff, weaponry, singularity.
