Feeding of 5000 John 6:1-14

Jesus’ feeding the 5000 is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew 14:13-21 Mark 6:30-44 Luke 9:10-17 John 6:1-14

Although the mountain setting simply provides a location for Jesus to perform a notable miracle, it is not without symbolism. Many significant events in Jesus’ ministry occurred on a mountain. Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) The Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-5) The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20)

Many other significant events occurred on mountains in the history of God’s people. Sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22:1-3) The Giving of The Law (Exodus 19:20-20:17) Defeat of Prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20-4)

Jesus is presented as the antitype of Jesus; He is not merely used by God to provide bread for His people, but is Himself sent by God as the life-giving ‘bread’ who gives life for the world (Andreas J. Both Philip and Andrew seemed to doubt whether the appropriate provisions could be made for the multitude. Rather than trusting in Jesus’ ability, they seemed to seek natural solutions to the problem. If anything, Jesus attempted to teach them the need to rely more fully on Him. This is a lesson we would do well to learn.

God’s blessings are never scarce. Jesus did not simply provide the multitude with a taste. The food produced was more than sufficient to meet their needs. So it is with the blessings of God.
