Wide Sargasso Sea as a Feminist Text WSS show cases the story of the mad wife of Mr. Rochester Mason in Jane Eyre Since Jane Eyre was first published by Charlotte Bronte in 1847, it is highly possible that Bronte might have included some feminist ideas into her novel

Wide Sargasso Sea as a Feminist Text The society which Antoinette lives in is highly patriarchal Male dominance is clearly showed through Mr. Mason and Rochester who tries to destroy her own identity In death, her spirit can be said to be crushed by the oppressive male world

Jane Eyre Jane Eyre shows slight parallels to WSS because it is slightly feminist in nature The protagonist, Jane Eyre, also lives within a male dominated society They try to keep Jane in a subordinate position and prevents her from expressing her own thoughts and feelings The end of the novel is a happy one with Rochester finally revealing his feelings to Jane and decides to marry her again.

WSS Read page 102, line 34 to page 104, line 6.

Discussion Questions Is Christophine afraid of Rochester? Why? Is Christophine and Antoinette intimate? “You think the men here touch me?” What does this say about Christophine?

No. Her analysis is powerful enough to make Rochester afraid. she challenges his white male authority. No. Antoinette's fear of the things hidden in Christophine's room. Page 69- "but how can she know the best thing for me to do, this ignorant, obstinate old negro woman..." Christophine’s betrayal in the end. Her words carry both magic (obeah) and authority.
