 Segmented Bowl Senior Woodwork

Overview  Materials and machines  4 step procedure: layout, cutting, laminating, turning.  Final product

Materials  2 boards of lumber (roughly 12 x 6”x 1”)  Wood glue  Heavy box of weights ( or anything heavy enough to compress glued pieces as clamps cannot be used)  Food safe finish

Machinery & Tools  Radial arm saw (rough cutting of wood)  Jointer (establishing reference face and edge)  Thickness planer (establishing true and flat board)  Compass  Band saw (cutting rings on 45 degree angle)  Table saw (cutting laminated stock dimensionally square)  Wood lathe and lathe cutting tools.

Layout Place boards side-by-side. Tape down to prevent movement. Using the compass, draw the series of circles as shown above Draw 3” base to start off Distance between circles must be identical to board thickness

Cutting Rings  Set the band saw table at a 45 degree angle.  Following the lines, carefully cut the rings. Once rings are cut out they should have the ability to be stacked up Large ring on bottom Base at top.

Laminating I ncorrect lamination positioning; Joints are not staggered. This will create a weak spot down the middle of the bowl. Correct lamination positioning. Joints are staggered. No weak points.

Inside view of lamination

Allow 8+ hours for glue to set

Turning Process Assemble appropriate lathe back plate onto back base of bowl. Make sure that back plate is centered onto work piece. Once back plate is assembled to bowl, thread onto outside lathe spindle.

Turning Process Turn interior and exterior of bowl. Watch the receding thickness, bowl may shatter! Use series of sandpaper ( ) for desired finish. Apply finish
