WORLD POLIO DAY 2014 | 5 Polio plus partners Governments of the World

WORLD POLIO DAY 2014 | 6 RESULTS POLIO CASES DOWN – FROM 350,000 WORLDWIDE TO 50 – FROM 125 COUNTRIES TO 2 WHAT EFFORTS WERE USED?

1. FUNDING Rotary funds critical elements of polio eradication programs, such as  National Immunization Days,  Polio vaccine delivery, and  Training of health workers.  $1.4 BILLION SO FAR

2. VOLUNTEER HOURS Rotary’s network of volunteers in more than 200 countries and regions has also worked with UNICEF in the field to ensure that the poorest, most isolated children are immunized against polio.

EFFORTS OF ROTARIANS  Armies of women mobilized alongside religious and community leaders,  Polio survivors and volunteer vaccinators going door-to-door to win hearts,

3. ADVOCACY ROTARY MOBILIZED PARTNERS :

4. AWARENESS DELIBERATE AWARENESS-RAISING STRATEGIES

Did you know that? Nigeria brought its 2014 Ebola outbreak to a swift end using the existing infrastructure created to fight polio.

Lessons learned from fighting polio — and the health infrastructure created to do so — pave the way for other lifesaving health interventions. This is a true legacy Rotary can be proud to leave for future generations.

THE CASE OF NIGERIA Nigeria’s achievement is truly remarkable. So many obstacles were overcome;  An immunization boycott,  Boko Haram insurgency,  The challenge of reaching every child in even the most remote villages.

inspiration Nigeria that accounted for more than half the world’s cases 3years ago is now removed from the list of endemic countries.

It also took: DETERMINATION LEADERSHIP GENEROUSITY

RESULTS After 30 years and $9.0 billion later=99.9%

BUT we aren’t there yet With every inch we gain against polio, we must redouble our efforts to protect that progress, and to eliminate polio from its final hideouts in some of the hardest-to- reach parts of the world

Too soon to celebrate The support of Rotary, donors, and governments remains critical in the final stages of polio eradication. Till polio is completely eradicated, the risk is still there.

Challenges still persists The remaining 1% are isolated due to: Geographical isolation Armed conflict Cultural barriers Poor infrastructure

Solutions 1.Your Voice 2.Fund-Raising 3.Volunteer (ambassadors etc) 4.Awareness-building

Donate to the Polio Plus Fund Through 2018 every $1 Rotary commits to direct support for polio immunization will be matched 2-to-1 (up to $35 million per year) by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Each donation to PolioPlus makes triple the impact!
