Today’s Sermon: Psalm 13-14, “Prayer for Help in Trouble/ Folly and Wickedness of Men” by Pastor Jim Bomkamp

Previous background for Psalm 11 King David refered to himself as a ‘bird’ and he spoke of his adversary as saying to his ‘soul’ to flee as a bird to his mountain.

Previous background for Psalm 12 King David ws concerned that godless men are no longer in the land. He feared the tongues of the wicked who spoke falsehood and also those who flattered with their lips.

Background for Psalm King David again asking the Lord how long He will delay in rescuing him. 2. In this Psalm David is asking for relief. 3. David asks several rhetorical questions as he tries to move the Lord to act on his behalf.

Background For Psalm King David describes the person who does not know God as being “a fool”. 2. This description of the “wicked” person the apostle Paul quotes for the most part in the third chapter of Romans. 3. King David reveals that all those who are “the wicked” will persecute those who are “the righteous”.

Psalms 13:1: King David asks the Lord how long He will forget him

Psalms 13:2: King David asks how long he shall take counsel in his soul and have sorrow in his heart all of the day

Psalms 13:3-4: King David asks the Lord to consider and answer him, and enlighten his eyes

Psalms 13:5-6: King David says he has trusted in the Lord’s lovingkindness and will rejoice in the Lord’s salvation

Psalms 14:1: The fool has said in his heart there is no God

Psalms 14:2-3: The Lord says all have turned aside and together they have become corrupt, and none does good, not even one

Psalms 14:4-5: King David asks whether the works of wickedness do not know, those who eat up His people like bread

Psalms 14:6-7: King David speaks to the wicked and tells them that they would put to shame the counsel of the afflicted, but the Lord is his refuge

CONCLUSIONS: 1. Do you rest in the lovingkindness of the Lord for you when you cannot understand why the Lord is allowing so many difficulties and trials in your life? 2. Are you choosing to rejoice in the Lord and sing Him praise even though He still has not delivered you from your trials and difficulties?
